Periodoncia

Healthy gums are the foundation of good oral health

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry in charge of detecting and treating pathologies that affect the periodontium. Study the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the tissues that protect, surround and support teeth: gums, bone, alveolar, alveolar ligament and root cementum.

Periodontal disease manifests itself in Gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums without affecting the bone) and Periodontitis (where we find destruction of the bone).

Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases and if it is not treated in time it can lead to the loss of teeth..

The main cause of periodontal disease is bacteria that live in the mouth and are deposited on the teeth and gums.

A good periodontal treatment ranges from education for good oral hygiene to control bacterial plaque, to the removal of tartar and periodontal pockets, which are usually triggers of this disease.

At DENTAL CLINIC EL CEDRO IN TENERIFE, we are experts in the treatment of periodontitis.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a frequent and mild periodontal disease of the gums that causes redness, inflammation, and easy bleeding from the part of the gums that surrounds the base of the teeth. In this early stage of the disease, the damage can be reversed if treated promptly since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place have not yet been affected. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can transform into periodontitis causing permanent damage to your teeth and loss.

The most frequent cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis (or pyorrhea, as it is popularly known) is a chronic infectious disease that affects the periodontium, that is, the tissues that surround, support or support and protect the teeth, against various mainly bacterial attacks.

It is usually given by poor oral hygiene, causing tartar to accumulate between the teeth.

As the disease progresses, it can lead to gum bleeding and pain, tooth mobility and loss.

How to prevent and treat periodontal disease?

Prevention is the key.

To prevent these periodontal diseases, daily dental hygiene is of utmost importance, regular brushing and the use of dental floss will help us prevent their appearance.

The best way to prevent periodontal disease and therefore the need to undergo periodontic techniques is:

- Maintain proper oral hygiene by using a brush, dental floss or interdental brushes, in addition to a suitable toothpaste, mouthwash and other antiseptic products that help control the proliferation of bacteria in the mouth.

- Go to your visit for regular professional cleaning and control following the instructions of your dentist.

If symptoms of these diseases still appear, the main treatment is root scaling and smoothing (curettage), which consists of a deep cleaning with local anesthesia, in order to remove the plaque that is under the gums.
